In the last few years one of his main clients has been the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and he has produced over 100 illustrations and diagrams for ‘Te Ara’ – the on-line encyclopedia of New Zealand
In 2003, together with Forest and Bird’s Carol Knutson, he wrote, illustrated and published ‘Kiwi Creatures’ (a colouring and conservation handbook) which has now sold out its print runs of 4000 copies. A second book with Carol, ‘Amazing Animals of New Zealand’ , was published in 2007 and is still available.
Mahalski is also a keen social historian and in 2005 he wrote two educational children’s books about New Zealand’s social history for Gilt Edge Publishing – 'New Zealand’s Golden Days' and 'Pounamu – A Stone of Many Uses'. Currently he is working on a history of Pacifism in New Zealand and a book linking the 1839 New Zealand Company/Port Nicholson Block 'Deal' with the events of 1840.
Since 2004 he has been working around 15 hours a week teaching screen-printing, illustration and cartooning courses to adults and general art classes for children at Inverlochy Art School in Wellington. He also teaches screen-printing at Weltech (Wellington's Technical College) and general art classes for Independent Living - a group for people suffering from brain injuries.
Bruce has also been involved with the Island Bay Marine Edcucation Centre since 1996 and has done a lot of work over the years in making educational resources and displays - including the Plankton display currently up at Reading Cinema Complex.
Bruce has also painted a number of large murals around Wellington - most notably the one at the Basin Reserve on Buckle Street.
